Why is rest, TRUE RESTORATIVE REST, so hard for us as adults?
We often collapse in bed at the end of the day, not because we are preparing ourselves for rest, but because we have run out of steam and just have to stop for a little while so we can start again tomorrow.
Sometimes even in Savasana, at the end of a yoga class, we find ourselves fighting the concept of rest. We are so good at the doing and the exertion and all the active movement, but we are not always so good at the resting part.
What if I told you that REST is one of the Six Pillars of Health, and that even if you are doing all the other pillars really well, if you neglect to make true restorative REST a priority, your well-being will be drastically affected?
It would be like eating at a dinner table with 6 legs, but having one of them broken. Can you imagine trying to keep your food on your plate or keeping your drink from spilling over?
REST MATTERS.
And it is one of the main topics I focus on in all of my Wellness Coaching. It’s THAT important.
Eating well is so important. Moving your body is critical. But getting the right kind of rest every single day needs to be a priority. Your present life needs it and your future life is depending on it. But what does that verse in Sanskrit from ~2,500 years ago mean for you and me in 2023?

I stood in awe and wonder as I looked up into the sky from my balcony and saw tonight’s moon phase - the Waxing Crescent. 🌙
This is the moon phase I was born under nearly 53 years ago, and while I love so many things about the half moon and the full moon and the new moon, it’s the Waxing Crescent that really speaks to my soul.
The waxing crescent is the moon’s first step toward fullness and represents a time of change and new opportunities. 🌒
The Waxing Crescent moon has been thought to be a call to action, which is in stark contrast to the New Moon’s restorative vibe and the expansiveness of the Full Moon.
But what does it mean for a moon phase to be a call to action?
It means that this is a time to consider what you’re working toward in your life and then be open and ready for whatever opportunities present themselves related to those very things!
It’s a time to live out that quote from Maya Angelou that says: “Ask for what you want and be prepared to get it!”
It’s a time to reflect on your intentions for 2023 (or even for this week) and ask yourself what you can do during this phase to bring those intentions to life.
My intention for 2023 is NOW.
I am choosing to be deliberate about what I do with the each “now” I’m given. I am being deliberate about how I live my NOW, so that I can be an example and maybe even a little bit of an inspiration for others who are trying so very hard to be present and authentically show up in their everyday lives.
NOW is my intention.
NOW is my call to action.
And I’m using the example of MOVING TOWARD FULLNESS that tonight’s moon gives me to reaffirm my intention.

18 months ago I had the privilege of meeting an in

18 months ago I had the privilege of meeting an incredible young lady and leading her in her very first yoga class.
Over the next year, she was on her mat with us @thebridgeyogabcs at least five times every week.
She grew in her practice in a way that was an honor to witness.
Six months ago she started her 200-hr yoga teacher training with us, and again, it was such an honor to get to be a part of her deepening practice and her growing confidence in following HER path.
She graduated from her yoga teacher training on December 17, 2022, but her plan in doing the training was never to “become a yoga instructor”; she truly wanted to just continue deepening her understanding of the 8-limbed path and how it informs all parts of her life.
Tonight, as John and I were sailing toward Honduras, the clock turned to 7:30pm, and it was time for my FOUNDATION YOGA class to start.
I saw the clock turn, and I smiled because in my place tonight, leading my precious Foundation group was that same incredible young lady that I only met 18 months ago.
She’s become a really important person to both John and me, and I was so very honored (as a fellow yogi) and so proud (like a mom) to know she was back at home tonight providing the Monday night crew with an experience to really set a calm and peace-filled tone for their week.
